Volkswagen Polo is a three- or five-door "small class" hatchback, which "lives" mainly in the countries of the Old World, where it enjoys decent popularity: it is chosen with equal success by both young people and people of venerable age ...

The fifth generation of the car for the first time honored the public with its presence in March 2009 at the Geneva Motor Show - compared to its predecessor, it has changed on all fronts, from appearance to technical "stuffing".

In the spring of 2014, all in the same Switzerland, the premiere show of the restyled hatchback took place - the exterior design was corrected, the interior was thoroughly redrawn, the power plant palette was modernized, the chassis settings were revised and the list of available equipment was expanded.

From whatever side you look at the fifth generation Volkswagen Polo, it looks strict and restrained, but very attractive. The full-face hatchback demonstrates the implacable look of lighting technology, emphasized by the sharp lines of the front end, and the embossed contours of the bumper, and its rear "flaunts" albeit lean, but somewhat simple, which is saved only by "designer" flashlight diffusers. The silhouette of the car is harmonious and tightly knit - a slightly sloping roofline, expressive "folds" on the sidewalls and developed outlines of the wheel arches.

"Polo" acts in the B-class according to the European classification and is offered in three- and five-door body types. In length, the hatchback (regardless of modification) is 3972 mm, its width is 1682 mm (including external mirrors - 1901 mm), and the height reaches 1453 mm. The wheelsets of the car are 2470 mm apart from each other, and its "belly" is separated from the roadway by 150 mm ground clearance.

The interior of the "fifth" Volkswagen Polo is to the envy of many competitors: it looks modern, strict and relatively expensive, and is completely devoid of ergonomic errors. A three-spoke multifunctional steering wheel with convenient shapes, a simple but extremely clear instrument panel with two dials and an on-board computer window, an exemplary center console with a 7-inch multimedia center screen and a stylish microclimate unit - there is no inside the car any design delights, but this in no way begs its merits. In addition to this, the decoration of the hatch is tailored exclusively with high-quality finishing materials, and it is also assembled conscientiously.

Front seats "Polo" are good in almost all respects - they hold well in corners, have a wide range of settings and are heated for an extra charge. The rear sofa of the "German" can accommodate two adult riders, however, they should not expect an excess of free space.

The trunk of the fifth incarnation of the Volkswagen Polo is typical for the "subcompact class" - its volume in the "stowed" form, regardless of modification, is 280 liters. The back of the second row of seats is folded either entirely or in two unequal sections, due to which the capacity of the "hold" increases to 952 liters (however, in this case, a flat floor does not work). The tank under the raised floor near the car contains tools and a compact "spare wheel".

Specifications. For "Polo" of the fifth generation, a wide range of power units is declared, which are mated with a 5- or 6-speed "mechanics" or a 7-band "robot" DSG and exclusively with a front-wheel drive transmission:

  • The initial petrol version is a 1.0-liter aluminum three-cylinder TSI engine with variable valve timing and a 12-valve layout:
    • in atmospheric form, it is equipped with distributed injection and generates 60 or 75 horsepower and 95 Nm of torque in both cases;
    • in a turbocharged form, it is supposed to have a direct "power supply", and the return here totals 95 or 110 "horses" and 160 or 200 Nm of rotating potential.
  • "Intermediate" petrol versions are equipped with an atmospheric 1.2-liter "four" TSI with multipoint injection, variable valve timing and 16 valves, available in two levels of boost: 90 "stallions" and 160 Nm of peak thrust, or 110 horsepower and 175 Nm ...
  • For the "top" modifications, an aluminum TSI engine with a volume of 1.4 liters with a direct fuel supply system, a 16-valve timing and a turbocharger is provided, producing 150 "horses" and 250 Nm of torque.
  • Diesel cars have under the hood a turbocharged "three" TDI of 1.4 liters with Common Rail fuel injection and 12 valves, giving out 75, 90 or 105 horsepower (210, 230 or 250 Nm of ultimate thrust, respectively).

The fifth Volkswagen Polo accelerates from zero to 100 km / h after 7.8-15.5 seconds, and reaches a maximum of 161-220 km / h. Gasoline cars "destroy" no more than 4.1-5 liters of fuel in combined conditions for each "hundred", while diesel cars are enough for 3.1-3.5 liters of "diesel fuel".

"Polo" of the fifth incarnation is built on a front-wheel drive "bogie" called "PQ25", implying a transverse engine placement. The car body is distinguished by the wide use of high-strength steel grades - they account for about 60%. The hatchback's suspension design is typical of the B-class: an independent system with MacPherson struts is installed in the front, and a semi-independent architecture with a torsion beam is installed in the rear.
As a standard, the "German" is armed with a rack and pinion steering mechanism with an adaptive electro-hydraulic amplifier. Its front wheels are equipped with ventilated disc brakes, and the rear wheels are equipped with drum or conventional disc devices, depending on the version.

Options and prices. In the spring of 2014, the Volkswagen Polo hatchback officially left the Russian market (due to low demand), but still remains successful in the countries of the Old World. In the same Germany, a car is sold at a price of 12,750 euros (~ 776 thousand rubles at the current exchange rate).
At the base, this hatchback is equipped with two airbags, 15-inch wheels, a tire pressure monitoring system, power windows, ABS, ASR, MSR, EBD, hill start assist technology, power steering, heating and electric mirrors, standard audio preparation and other modern equipment.
