The Dongfeng 580 is a front-wheel-drive mid-size SUV with a five- or seven-seat cabin layout that combines attractive styling, a high level of practicality and state-of-the-art technology ...

It is "addressed" to city dwellers (primarily families who have one or more children) who need a "multifunctional vehicle", but do not practice forays on serious off-road ...

The official premiere of the "580th" took place in April 2016 (at the Beijing International Auto Show), and in June its sales were launched in the Chinese market.

Exactly one year later, the car underwent restyling (making its debut on the podiums of the Shanghai Motor Show) - the exterior was slightly "refreshed" due to tweaked bumpers and optics, the interior was thoroughly redesigned, completely changing the center console, and the list of equipment was expanded, but the technical " stuffing ".

In general, the Dongfeng 580 looks pretty, fresh, harmonious and quite solid, and in its appearance it is difficult to find obvious borrowings.

At the front, the crossover attracts attention with slanting optics with "ribbon" daytime running lights, a monumental "shield" of the radiator grille with three chrome bars and a sculpted bumper, while at the rear it boasts full LED C-shaped lights and an impressive trunk lid.

In profile, the five-door flaunts dynamic and balanced outlines with a sloping roof, expressive sides, a billowing window sill line and embossed wheel arches with which the standard 17-inch wheels enter into obvious dissonance - they are perceived too small against the background of the overall light weight of the silhouette.

In terms of its dimensions, Dongfeng 580 belongs to the segment of mid-size SUVs: it is 4680 mm wide, 1715 mm high, and does not exceed 1845 mm in width. The center distance of the car extends to 2780 mm, and its ground clearance is 180 mm.

When equipped, the "Chinese" weighs from 1460 to 1510 kg, depending on the modification, and its gross weight is from 1985 to 2035 kg.

Inside, the Dongfeng 580 evokes associations with the latest BMW models, especially the center console, which is slightly turned towards the driver, with a 10-inch display of the infotainment complex sticking out on top of it, below which there are neat climate control units and other auxiliary functions. The “inner world” is successfully complemented by a three-spoke multi-steering wheel with a rim flattened at the bottom and a laconic instrument cluster with a pair of analog dials and a small “window” of the on-board computer between them.

By default, the Dongfeng 580 has a five-seat "apartment" layout. In the front part, there are ergonomic chairs with unobtrusive support bolsters on the sides, moderately dense padding and large adjustment ranges, and on the second row there is a comfortable sofa that can be adjusted in the longitudinal direction.

As an option for an off-road vehicle, a two-seater "gallery" is offered, but only children can more or less comfortably accommodate on it.

With a seven-seat layout, the trunk of the crossover can accommodate 375 liters of luggage, but the length of the cargo area in this case is only 390 mm.

The third row of seats folds in two equal sections, increasing the compartment volume to 1120 liters, and the second row - in the ratio "60:40", which makes it possible to bring the "hold" capacity to 2215 liters (in both cases, it turns out to be an almost even "rookery").

The car in the "base" relies on a full-size spare wheel, which is suspended under the bottom (on the street ").

For the Dongfeng 580, two petrol four-cylinder engines with a vertical architecture, distributed fuel injection, variable valve timing and 16-valve DOHC timing are offered:

  • Basic versions of the mid-size SUV have an SFG18 naturally aspirated unit with a working volume of 1.8 liters (1798 cubic centimeters) under the hood, which produces 132 horsepower at 6000 rpm and 176 Nm of torque at 3600 rpm.
  • "Top" modifications can boast of a 1.5-liter (1498 cubic centimeters) engine with a turbocharger, producing 146 hp. and 220 Nm of peak potential.

The "junior" version is installed together with a 5-speed "mechanics" and a front-wheel drive transmission, and the "senior" - with a "manual" gearbox for six gears or a continuously variable CVT variator. Four-wheel drive for a five-door is not provided even for an extra charge.

In the combined travel mode, the crossover "digests" from 7.4 to 7.6 liters of gasoline for every "hundred" of the run (depending on the decision).

The Dongfeng 580 is based on a front-wheel-drive "bogie" with a monocoque body, the power structure of which largely consists of high-strength steel grades. An independent suspension with MacPherson struts is installed on the front axle of the SUV, and a semi-independent "hodovka" with a torsion beam (in both cases - with coil springs and anti-roll bars) is installed in the rear.

The car is equipped with a rack and pinion steering complex, into which an electric control amplifier is "implanted". All five-door wheels are equipped with disc brakes (ventilated at the front), working in conjunction with ABS, EBD and other assistants.

At first, Dongfeng 580 is offered on the Russian market (since August 2019) only in a seven-seater modification with an atmospheric engine in the only configuration called "Comfort", for which dealers ask a minimum of 1,190,000 rubles, while cars with turbo engines will get to our country no earlier than 2020.

By default, the crossover is equipped with: two airbags, ABS, ESP, TCS, 17-inch alloy wheels, power and heated mirrors, power windows for all doors, "leather" interior trim, a media center with an 8-inch screen, an audio system with six speakers, air conditioning , ERA-GLONASS technology, a rear-view camera, an electric sunroof and some other equipment.
